Dressed to thrill: The £2,000 Halloween style challenge
The Shush team gave me a challenge: create a complete, head-to-toe designer Halloween party look with a budget of £2,000.
I wanted to put together something with a little gothic glamour, plenty of personality and pieces you would be excited to wear again. Halloween gives us a wonderful excuse to embrace darker colours, dramatic details and statement accessories, so I had plenty of inspiration.
My finished edit brings together romantic black lace, glossy leather, studded heels and a touch of sparkle. It also features some fabulous designers, including Nina Ricci, Philipp Plein, Christian Louboutin, Alaïa and Burberry.
Here’s how I brought the look together, and why I think these pieces deserve a place in your wardrobe long after the Halloween decorations come down.
First, the dress
I chose this black Nina Ricci dress as the foundation of the outfit. The lace, sequins and decorative neckline give it exactly the dark, romantic feel I was looking for, while the defined waist and gently flared skirt create a beautiful silhouette.
What I particularly like is the way the detail stays within the black palette. You have texture, sheer lace and little flashes of light from the embellishment, all working together. It feels special before you have added a single accessory.
For a Halloween party, black lace is such a good starting point. It immediately brings a gothic mood, and there are lots of ways to style it depending on how dramatic you want to go. I decided to give this dress a tougher edge through leather and studded accessories.
It is also a piece I can easily imagine wearing for festive drinks or a winter celebration. Swap the accessories for something more delicate and the same dress takes on a completely different character.
A little leather attitude
Next, I added this belted Philipp Plein leather coat. I love the combination of delicate lace and leather: the different textures give an all-black outfit depth and make each piece more interesting.
The coat’s broad lapels, glossy finish and defined waist bring plenty of drama. It becomes part of the outfit from the moment you arrive, which was important to me when putting together a complete look.
I would wear it open to show the lace underneath, or fasten the belt to make the coat’s silhouette the focus. Either way, it adds that slightly rebellious feel I wanted.
A shorter leather jacket would work beautifully with a party dress, too. I chose this longer style because it has such presence, and because I can see it working with so many other outfits. Jeans, boots and a simple knit would give it a more relaxed outing once Halloween is over.
Heels with a little bite
These Christian Louboutin heels were the perfect addition. Between the black ruffled detailing, metallic spikes and slim heel, they bring plenty of attitude. Then there is that flash of red beneath the sole.
I like how they pick up different elements of the outfit. The ruffles sit beautifully alongside the decorative dress, while the studs introduce the metal detailing that runs through my other accessories.
When I am putting several statement pieces together in one look, those connections help everything feel considered. Here, the black palette gives the outfit consistency, leaving room to play with texture and embellishment.
These shoes would also make a fantastic focal point with tailored trousers and a simple top. For this look, I would make sure the ankle detailing remains visible. It is far too good to hide.
A clutch with character
For the bag, I chose this glossy black Alaïa clutch. I love its scalloped edges, decorative shapes and metallic studs. There is so much detail to enjoy, while the compact shape works beautifully for an evening outfit.
The curved edges echo the softer details of the lace dress, and the studding connects with the shoes. That balance is what appealed to me: each piece brings something different, but there is a clear relationship between them.
It is a useful idea to borrow when styling your own party look. A repeated shape, texture or metal detail can help different accessories feel connected.
I can also imagine this clutch against a much simpler outfit. A plain black dress or a sleek trouser suit would give all that intricate detailing a chance to take centre stage.
Finishing touches from head to toe
To complete the accessories, I added a chunky black studded cuff. Its broad shape gives it presence at the wrist, and it continues the leather and metal theme running through the outfit.
With so much detail already in the dress, shoes and bag, I wanted the jewellery to make a confident contribution without adding lots of separate pieces. This cuff does that beautifully.
My final touch was the embellished Burberry headband. I love the way it introduces a little sparkle around the face, while its geometric embellishments complement the studs elsewhere in the look.
A headband also works particularly well with a dress that has an interesting neckline. It adds another point of interest while leaving that detail visible. I would keep the hair fairly simple, perhaps loose and tucked behind the ears, or in an unfussy updo, and let the headband provide the finishing touch.
Halloween and beyond
One of my priorities was choosing pieces that could earn their place in your wardrobe beyond a single party.
The Nina Ricci dress is ready for the festive season. The leather coat can become part of an everyday outfit. The Louboutin heels and Alaïa clutch can bring personality to simpler eveningwear, while the cuff and headband can add interest to pieces you already own.
That is part of what I enjoy about preloved designer fashion. You can bring together distinctive pieces from different designers and create a look that feels entirely your own.
You could take inspiration from the whole outfit, or choose just one element. A lace dress with your favourite leather jacket, studded heels with something simple, or a sparkling headband might be all you need to bring a Halloween mood to your wardrobe.

My complete six-piece look comes to £2,062, so I did sneak £62 over the original £2,000 budget. With everything covered from the embellished headband to those statement heels, I’m delighted with how it came together.
You’ll find all my chosen pieces below. Whether you’re dressing for Halloween cocktails or looking ahead to the party season, I hope this edit gives you a little inspiration to embrace your darker side.
